Hey Lovely DIY Enthusiasts,
Ever feel like your home is secretly plotting against you with all its clutter? Same. But I decided to fight back, and let me tell you, the results were more than just a tidier space. Decluttering changed my life in ways I didn’t expect. Let’s dive into my journey from chaos to calm!
That Clean Room Feeling
You know that feeling when you have a clean room, you shower, and get to snuggle into those clean sheets? That’s what I want to feel when I walk into my home every day (or at least try to) because these kids don’t give a sh*t about me or the nice stuff I want to have in my house. LOL. But seriously, let’s reclaim that serene feeling.
Step 1: Acknowledge the Chaos
The first step is admitting you have a problem. My problem? I have ADHD, which means my executive functioning skills sometimes go on vacation without me. Executive functioning refers to a set of cognitive processes that help us plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. People with ADHD often struggle with these skills, making it hard to organize tasks and manage time effectively.
So what does that look like for me? I need to leave everything out so I can see it in order not to forget. Thus, I create piles of stuff on tables and counters everywhere. Sound familiar?
Face the Mess: Pick one room or area to start. For me, it was the living room.
Visualize: Imagine how the space should look and feel. Calm, organized, inviting.
Step 2: The Great Declutter
Now comes the hard part—actually getting rid of things.
Set a Timer: 15-30 minute sessions work wonders. It’s less overwhelming.
Sort Ruthlessly: Keep, Donate, Toss. If it doesn’t spark joy or serve a purpose, it’s out.
Step 3: Organize Like a Pro
Once you’ve purged, it’s time to organize what’s left.
Storage Solutions: Baskets, bins, and boxes are your best friends. Label everything.
Everything in Its Place: Assign a home for each item. If it doesn’t have a place, do you really need it?
I believe that everything needs to have a place, and if it doesn’t, then it has to go. I have one section in my house for miscellaneous stuff. If it can’t go there, then it’s got to go. When I look at purging my closet, if I haven’t worn it in 2 years…again, it’s got to go. Stop holding onto stuff just in case. That just-in-case pile of crap is suffocating your spirit and cluttering your brain.
Unexpected Benefit 1: Mental Clarity
Less clutter equals less stress. Seriously. I found that a tidy home led to a clearer mind. It’s like magic, but real.
Unexpected Benefit 2: Rediscovered Treasures
I found items I’d forgotten I had—like that fancy coffee maker still in the box. Hello, morning lattes!
Unexpected Benefit 3: Increased Productivity
With less stuff in the way, I could actually focus on projects and get things done. No more searching for lost tools or materials.
The Zen Zone
Decluttering was more than just a physical task—it was a mental cleanse. My home now feels like a peaceful retreat rather than a chaotic battlefield. And guess what? Yours can too.
